Meniscal Tears: Causes, Symptoms, and Effective Treatments
What are Meniscal Tears?
Meniscal tears are common knee injuries that occur when the meniscus, a C-shaped piece of cartilage that acts as a shock absorber between the femur and tibia, is damaged. Meniscal tears often result from sudden twists or turns, particularly in sports.

01
Symptoms
-
Pain along the knee joint line
-
Swelling and stiffness in the knee
-
A popping sensation at the time of injury
-
Difficulty bending or straightening the knee
-
Locking or catching of the knee joint during movement
02
Risk Factors
-
Age: Meniscal tissue weakens and becomes more prone to tears with age
-
Sports-related activities: Especially those involving sudden stops and turns, such as soccer, football, or skiing
-
Previous knee injuries: Increase the risk of further meniscal damage
-
Degenerative conditions: Such as osteoarthritis, which can weaken the meniscus
03
Treatment
-
Rest and Ice: To reduce pain and swelling
-
Physical Therapy: Exercises to strengthen the muscles around the knee and improve joint stability
-
Ultrasound-Guided Steroid Injections: Alleviating pain and reducing inflammation in the knee joint
-
PRP Injections: Promoting healing of the meniscal tissue using the body’s natural growth factors
-
Surgical Repair or Removal: In cases of severe or non-healing tears, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary
