What is Subacromial Bursitis

​Subacromial bursitis involves inflammation of the bursa located under the acromion. The bursa serves as a cushion, reducing friction between the acromion and the rotator cuff.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the upper shoulder or upper arm

  • Pain during overhead activities or while lying on the affected side

  • Swelling and tenderness in the shoulder

Risk Factors

  • Repetitive overhead movements: Common in athletes and certain occupations

  • Trauma: Direct injury to the shoulder

  • Rotator cuff injuries: Often associated with bursitis

  • Rheumatoid arthritis: Increases the likelihood of developing bursitis

  • Poor posture: Contributes to abnormal shoulder mechanics

Treatment

  • Rest and Ice: To reduce inflammation

  • Physical Therapy: Strengthening shoulder muscles and improving posture

  • Ultrasound-Guided Steroid Injections: Targeting the inflamed bursa to reduce pain and inflammation

  • NSAIDs: To manage pain and reduce swelling
