Shoulder Impingement Syndrome: Symptoms, Causes, and Treatment Options
What is Shoulder Impingement Syndrome?
Shoulder impingement syndrome occurs when the rotator cuff tendons and/or bursa are compressed between the acromion and the humerus, leading to pain and inflammation

01
Symptoms
-
Pain when lifting the arm, especially above shoulder height
-
Pain when lying on the affected side
-
Tenderness at the front of the shoulder
-
Loss of strength and range of motion
02
Risk Factors
-
Overhead activities: Such as swimming, tennis, or throwing sports
-
Poor posture: Leading to abnormal shoulder mechanics
-
Rotator cuff tendinitis: Can predispose to impingement
-
Anatomical variations: Such as a curved or hooked acromion
03
Treatment
-
Rest and Activity Modification: Avoiding activities that exacerbate symptoms
-
Physical Therapy: Exercises to strengthen the rotator cuff and improve shoulder mechanics
-
Ultrasound-Guided Injections: Reducing inflammation in the affected area
-
Surgical Decompression: In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to remove bony spurs or repair the rotator cuff
