Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome: Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment
What is Tarsal Tunnel Syndrome?
Tarsal tunnel syndrome is a condition caused by compression of the posterior tibial nerve as it travels through the tarsal tunnel, a narrow space on the inside of the ankle. This condition leads to pain, tingling, and numbness in the foot and ankle, and is similar to carpal tunnel syndrome in the wrist.

01
Symptoms
-
Pain and burning sensation in the sole of the foot
-
Tingling and numbness in the foot and ankle
-
Pain that worsens with activity, especially walking or standing
-
Weakness in the foot muscles
02
Risk Factors
-
Flat feet: Can cause the nerve to be compressed more easily
-
Varicose veins: Swollen veins can press on the nerve
-
Previous ankle injuries: Increase the risk of developing tarsal tunnel syndrome
-
Repetitive stress: Common in athletes and people who stand for long periods
03
Treatment
-
Rest and Activity Modification: Reducing activities that aggravate symptoms
-
Orthotics: Custom shoe inserts to relieve pressure on the nerve
-
Ultrasound-Guided Steroid Injections: Reducing inflammation and pain around the nerve
-
PRP Therapy: Promoting nerve healing using the body’s natural growth factors
-
Hyaluronic Acid Injections: Providing additional lubrication to reduce friction and pain
